Embodiment Construction

[0021] The present disclosure is organized as follows. Section A describes a computer-implemented system for providing context-sensitive information to users interacting with a physical environment. Section B sets forth an illustrative method for explaining the operation of the system of Section A. And Section C describes illustrative computing functions that can be used to implement any aspect of the features described in Sections A and B.

[0022] As a preliminary matter, some of the figures in the drawings describe concepts in the context of one or more structural components, which are also referred to as functions, modules, features, elements, etc. In one implementation, various components shown in the figures may be implemented by software or hardware (eg, logic functions implemented by a chip) running on a computer device, etc., or any combination thereof. In one instance, the shown division of various components into distinct units in the figures may reflect the use o...

Abstract

This article describes computer-implemented functionality for assisting a user in interacting with an environment. In one implementation, the functionality operates by determining that a particular user is, or will be, within a specified proximity to an electronic sign based on sensor information provided by one or more sensors within the environment ; determine the identity of the user; determine at least one destination for the user based at least on calendar information; provide directions to the destination(s) to provide unfiltered direction information; optionally about restricted information (e.g., private information, security information, etc.) to filter the unfiltered guidance information to generate filtered guidance information; to form signage information based on the filtered guidance information; and to send the signage information to the electronic signage for signage presentation.

Description

Background technique [0001] Physical signage includes fixed directions directing users to common destinations. For example, physical signs in hallways of an office building can provide fixed directions directing employees to nearby meeting rooms. Signs along the roadside can provide fixed directions directing pedestrians to upcoming off-ramps, among other things. While ubiquitous and often helpful, these physical signs have drawbacks. For example, upon encountering a sign, a person may need to study the sign in detail to determine whether it is relevant to the person's intended destination. Directing the person's attention to the physical markers may slow his or her progress through the environment, and may also pose a safety hazard. In other cases, a person may find that there are no physical markers specific to his or her particular purpose of travel; here, the person wastes time researching the marker(s) without gaining any benefit from it. [0002] The industry offers ...
