Abstract

The present invention provides a rotary cutting tool having a shank and an interchangeable cutting bit, wherein the shank includes a pocket that receives the interchangeable cutting bit via an interference fit. The recess comprises two centering wall portions oriented at a first angle relative to each other when viewed along the central longitudinal axis, the first angle being greater than zero. The interchangeable cutting bit is axially displaceable between: an initial position, assumed when received in a recess of the shank; a clamped position, wherein the interchangeable cutting bit is fixed relative to the shank and a push-out position, wherein the interchangeable cutting bit is held loosely. The retaining element retains the interchangeable cutting bit in the clamped position, and the ejection element displaces the interchangeable cutting bit between the clamped position and the ejected position. Other variations and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.

Description

Background technique [0001] Various drill bits with replaceable cutting bits (or cutting inserts) are conventionally known. Illustrative examples can be seen in US Patents 7,309,196 and 7,467,915 to Frota de Souza, Filho and 9,205,498 to Jaeger. Such drills involve replaceable cutting heads mounted on a shank. Typically, though by no means exclusively, the cutting head and shank may exhibit a continuous and complementary flute bit configuration. Each shank will typically include structure for holding and rotating an associated cutting bit, and the associated cutting bit will have complementary structure for being held and rotated by the shank. [0002] Challenges with respect to deformation and failure are routinely encountered during the useful life of a drill bit due (at least in part) to stress concentrations exerted on the holding and driving structures of the shank during normal use. This may unduly limit the useful life of the drill bit, and related improvements and m...
