Embodiment Construction

[0009] Existing methods for controlling pests in food and other agricultural products include the use of pesticides and chemical fumigants. However, agricultural products exported from developing countries to the United States need to comply with the United States' maximum residue limits for chemicals and pesticides.

[0010] Alternative, non-chemical methods of pest control use dielectric heating with radio frequency and / or microwave frequency radiation to generate heat within the material. The radio frequency band of the electromagnetic spectrum covers electromagnetic waves with frequencies in the range of about 3 kilohertz (kHz) to about 300 gigahertz (GHz). Microwaves cover electromagnetic waves with frequencies in the range of about 300 megahertz (MHz) to about 300 GHz.

[0011] During dielectric heating, the material to be heated can form a dielectric between two parallel plate electrodes, which can alternatively be charged by a high frequency electric field. Dipoles w...

Abstract

A method of disinfesting psyllium is disclosed. The method comprises the steps: introducing psyllium to a radiation chamber and applying a high-frequency alternating electric field to the psyllium fora residence time of greater than about 1.5 minutes to dielectrically heat the psyllium to a target temperature of about 54 DEG C to about 82 DEG C to form treated psyllium. The treated psyllium doesnot comprise a pest infestation and the swell volume of the treated psyllium can be substantially the same as untreated psyllium.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to methods of disinfesting psyllium, and more particularly to the use of high-frequency alternating electric fields to dielectrically heat psyllium to disinfeste psyllium without significantly altering the psyllium method of the characteristics. Background technique [0002] Psyllium is a natural source of dietary fiber that has been shown to have health benefits when taken daily and in recommended doses. Fiber, through its ability to form gels in the gastrointestinal tract, can deliver the health benefits of lowering cholesterol, improving blood sugar control, weight management, and normalizing stool. However, many adults do not consume enough fiber in their diets, and therefore often use supplemental fiber products to meet the recommended daily dosage. [0003] Agricultural products, including supplemental fiber products such as psyllium products, must be free from pests to be commercially useful. Chemical f...
