Embodiment 1

[0129] Derived from Guerbet alcohols (i.e., 2-octyl-1-dodecanol) and linear acids (i.e., capric acid, linear C12 2-octyldodecyl dodecanoate of carboxylic acid) exhibited excellent CCSV reducing efficacy. like figure 2 As shown, 2-octyldodecyl dodecanoate exhibits a negative D(ccsv) 3 is quite high making it a highly effective CCSV reducing base stock without Significantly affects the KV100 of the blend oil.

Embodiment 2

[0131] Derived from Guerbet alcohols (i.e., 2-octyl-1-dodecanol) and linear acids (i.e., nonanoic acid, linear C9 Carboxylic acid) of nonanoic acid 2-octyldodecyl ester showed excellent CCSV reducing efficacy. like figure 2 As shown, 2-octyldodecyl nonanoate exhibits a negative D(ccsv) 3 is quite high, making it a highly effective base stock for CCSV reduction without significant Affects the KV100 of the blend oil.

Embodiment 3

[0132] Embodiment 3 (comparison)

[0133] Di-isooctyl adipate derived from isooctyl alcohol and adipic acid (Esterex TM A32, a commercial Group V ester-type base stock available from ExxonMobil Chemical Company having an address of 4500 Bayway Drive, Baytown, Texas 77450, United States), exhibited CCSV reducing efficacy, as shown in FIG. 3 . However, the high Noack volatility (>30%) of this diester prevents this ester from being an inventive example of a CCSV reducing base. As this example shows, it can be achieved simply by including a low molecular weight ester such as Esterex TM A32 reduces the CCSV of the formulation. However, the high NV value of this ester makes it unsuitable for use in engine oil formulations. In contrast, the CCSV reducing monoesters of the present disclosure have an NV value of not higher than 20%, preferably not higher than 15%, more preferably not higher than 10%.

Abstract

This disclosure relates to cold cranking simulator viscosity (CCSV) reducing base stocks that allow flexibility for low viscosity SAE engine oil grades (e.g., 5W and OW) to meet demanding low temperature viscosity requirements while maintaining a higher base oil viscosity for improved wear protection. The CCSV-reducing base stocks include mono-esters derivable from a Guerbet alcohol and a monocarboxylic acid. The disclosure also relates to lubricating oils containing the CCSV-reducing base stocks, and a method for improving fuel efficiency and/or wear protection in an engine by using as the lubricating engine oil a formulated oil containing one or more of the CCSV-reducing base stocks.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of Provisional Application No. 62 / 477,738, filed March 28, 2017, and European Application No. 17178247.7, filed June 28, 2017, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to a "cold cranking simulator viscosity (CCSV") reducing base stock that allows flexibility in low viscosity SAE engine oil grades (eg, 5W and 0W) to meet low temperature and high temperature viscosity requirements Lubricating oil formulations containing said CCSV reducing base stocks and improving fuel efficiency and / or wear protection in said engines by using lubricating oil formulations containing one or more of said CCSV reducing base stocks as engine oils Methods. Background technique [0004] Ongoing regulatory pressure to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions is driving the automotive industry towards the use of lower vi...
