Embodiment Construction

[0019] The present disclosure is generally directed to systems and methods for load balancing multicast traffic using a multicast distribution tree across data links interconnecting a network of switches, such as those making up a Virtual Chassis fabric. Embodiments of the present disclosure may compute two or more multicast distribution trees rooted at a particular switch in the network, and may balance across two or more of these multicast distribution trees in Multicast traffic entering the network at any switch in the network.

[0020] As will be explained in more detail below, by load balancing multicast traffic across multiple multicast distribution trees, embodiments of the present disclosure can substantially improve data link utilization. For example, by generating a multicast distribution tree that can include paths to all switches in the network, embodiments of the present disclosure can forward multicast packets entering a switch from outside the network along any ...

Abstract

The invention provides systems and methods for load balancing multicast traffic. A computer-implemented method for load balancing multicast traffic may include (1) identifying a plurality of switchesthat include at least a first switch that is connected to a second switch by a first path and a second path, (2) calculating a plurality of multicast distribution trees for distributing multicast traffic among the plurality of switches that includes (i) a first tree that includes the first path and whose root is different than the root of a second tree and (ii) the second tree that includes the second path, (3) receiving a plurality of multicast packets ingress to the plurality of switches at the first switch, and (4) using at least two of the plurality of multicast distribution trees to transmit the plurality of multicast packets from the first switch to the second switch. Various other methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of the original Chinese invention patent application entitled "System and Method for Load Balancing Multicast Traffic". The application number of the original application is 201510130560.3, the filing date of the original application is March 24, 2015, and the priority date of the original application is March 31, 2014. technical field [0002] The present disclosure relates generally to load balancing, and more particularly, to systems and methods for load balancing multicast traffic. Background technique [0003] Conventional techniques for distributing multicast traffic within a layer-2 network generally rely on spanning tree protocols to prevent multicast packets from looping in the layer-2 network and flooding the layer-2 network. Unfortunately, despite successfully eliminating loops, spanning tree protocols can restrict multicast traffic to a single set of data links, which can cause redundant data links to go unused....
