Abstract

The invention discloses a magnetic write head with dual return pole. Disclosed herein are magnetic write heads and data storage devices comprising such write heads. A magnetic write head comprises a leading side, a trailing side, an air-bearing surface (ABS), a main pole disposed between the leading side and the trailing side and extending to the ABS, a first return pole disposed between the mainpole and the leading side, and a second return pole disposed between the main pole and the trailing side. One or both of the main pole and the second return pole may be tapered.

Background technique [0001] Higher storage bit densities in magnetic media used in disk drives have reduced the size (volume) of data cells to the point where the cell size is limited by the grain size of the magnetic material. Although the grain size can be further reduced, the data stored within the cell may not be thermally stable. That is, random thermal fluctuations in ambient temperature may be sufficient to erase data. This state is described as the superparamagnetic limit, which determines the maximum theoretical storage density for a given magnetic medium. This limit can be increased by increasing the coercivity of the magnetic media or by lowering the temperature. When designing hard drives for commercial and consumer use, lowering the temperature may not always be possible. On the other hand, increasing the coercivity may lead to the need for write heads comprising higher magnetic moment materials, or techniques such as (perpendicular recording or both). [0002...
