Embodiment Construction

[0029] figure 1 The camera device 20 is shown schematically supported on a vehicle 22 . The camera device 20 may be used for various detection or image acquisition purposes, such as detecting objects or conditions in the vicinity of the vehicle.

[0030] like Figure 2-Figure 4 As shown, the cameras 20 each include a housing 30 that supports a lens 32 . A sensor 34 configured to capture an image or acquire image information is supported on a substrate 36 . In the example embodiment shown, the substrate 36 is a generally planar printed circuit board. The sensor 34 is secured in a fixed position on the substrate 36, which in some embodiments is accomplished by soldering the sensor 34 in place.

[0031] Electroactive polymer 40 responds to electrical energy by changing shape or volume. Electroactive polymer 40 selectively causes relative motion between sensor 34 and lens 32 when electroactive polymer 40 responds to changes in electrical energy supplied thereto. Such relativ...

Abstract

An illustrative example camera device (20) includes a substrate (36) and a sensor (34) supported on the substrate (36). A sensor (34) is configured to acquire image information. A lens (32) is positioned adjacent to the sensor (34), and the electroactive polymer (40) selectively induces relative motion between the sensor (34) and the lens (32).

Description

Background technique [0001] Various sensor types have proven useful for providing enhanced features and controls on automotive vehicles. Cameras are useful for detecting objects near the vehicle or in the vehicle's path and providing visual information to the driver. The types of cameras that are included on vehicles often require lens to lens alignment with extreme precision. Known techniques to achieve this alignment rely on expensive equipment and introduce complexity and delays into the manufacturing process. For example, a five-axis machine controls the relative position of the lens to the sensor during active focus calibration. Once the desired alignment is achieved, at least one cure cycle holds the assembly in place. [0002] In addition to the increased expense associated with the specialized equipment and time delays mentioned above, known camera assembly techniques have another drawback. Once the camera sensor and lens are cured in place, no further adjustment o...
