Embodiment Construction

[0036] The present invention will be described in exemplary form with reference to the specific disclosure set forth below with respect to the accompanying drawings.

[0037] Although the exemplary embodiment is depicted with respect to a manual injection device, the skilled artisan will understand that caps according to the present invention may be used with a variety of injection devices that require removal of the shield. Such an injection device may be a manual injection device, a gripping attachment supporting a manual injection device, or an automatic injection device (e.g., an autoinjector) in which needle penetration and plunger actuation are performed automatically by a drive system one or more of . The benefits of the cap according to the invention can thus be achieved with many types of injection devices which require removal of the shield.

Abstract

A cap for an injection device includes a removable needle boot for covering a needle of a syringe within the injection device. The cap comprises a cap body and a first boot engagement portion. The first boot engagement portion is movable relative to the cap body and comprises a first pinch portion. The first pinch portion is configured such that application of compressive force to the first pinchportion effects engagement of the first boot engagement portion with the needle boot for removal of the needle boot with the cap as it is removed from the injection device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of injection devices, in particular to caps for use with injection devices and caps and injection devices in combination. Background technique [0002] Safety devices are often used with syringes when performing injections in order to reduce the risk of accidental needle sticks that could lead to the transmission of blood-borne pathogens. Such safety devices are often required to protect healthcare providers, such as doctors and nurses, who often use syringes to administer injections to patients. These needle safety devices can generally be classified as one of two types: (1) passive devices that automatically cover the needle after injection without requiring the user to take additional steps to activate the device; and (2) that require the user to perform additional steps to activate the needle safety feature. Passive needle safety devices are generally considered superior in their ability to protect the u...
