Embodiment Construction

[0014] In the following paragraphs, example embodiments will be described in further detail with reference to the figures. In the description, well-known components, methods and / or processing techniques are omitted or briefly described. Furthermore, reference to various feature(s) of an embodiment does not mean that all embodiments must include the referenced feature(s).

[0015] Example embodiments described herein relate to a luminaire having a housing and a lens disposed within the housing. The lens consists of two distinct broad surfaces. The lens emits light having a first distribution when the lens is oriented in the illuminator housing with the first wide surface facing the light source. However, when the lens is removed, turned over, and inserted back into the luminaire housing such that the lens is oriented with the opposite second wide surface facing the light source of the luminaire, the lens emits light having a second distribution different from the first distri...

Abstract

A luminaire includes a housing, a light source, and a lens. The lens has a first side and a second side, and at least one of the first side and the second side has an optical feature. The lens may be positioned in the luminaire in a first position with the first side facing upward; and positioned in the luminaire in a second position with the second side facing upward. The two options for positioning the lens within the luminaire provide two different distributions for light exiting the luminaire.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present technology relate generally to luminaires and, more particularly, to dual distribution lenses for luminaires. Background technique [0002] Luminaires (or luminaires) typically include multiple components, such as housings, light sources, reflectors, lenses, and trim. Among the various parts of the luminaire, the seller can provide the customer with options for various parts. For example, a seller of luminaires may offer customers different types of trims that offer different looks. Vendors of luminaires may also offer different types of lenses that provide different light distributions. For example, a vendor may provide a customer with a first type of lens that provides a wide light distribution from the luminaire. However, if the customer wants or a particular environment requires a narrower light distribution, the vendor can provide a second type of lens that modifies the light leaving the luminaire to achieve a narrowe...
