A digital switching power amplifier with Multivariable Enhanced Cascade Controlled (MECC) includes a modulator, a switching power stage and a low pass filter. In the first preferred embodiment an enhanced cascade control structure local to the switching power stage is added, characterised by having a single local feedback path A (7) with a lowpass characteristic and local forward blocks B1 or B (3, 4). The leads to a much improved system with a very low sensitivity to errors in the switching power stage. In the second preferred embodiment of the invention the control structure is extended with a global structure composed of a single feed-back path C (8) and forward paths blocks D1 or D (1, 2). This provides further improvements and a very low sensitivity to load variations and filter errors. Both MECC embodiments are characterised by being simple in implementation, stable and extendible by adding / removing simple local (3) or global (1) forward path blocks. A third embodiment of the invention is a controlled self-oscillating pulse modulator, characterised by first a non-hysteresis comparator as modulator and second by a higher order oscillating loop realized in both forward path B1 and feedback path A to determine stable self-oscillating conditions. An implemented 250W example MECC digital power amplifier has proven superior performance in terms of audio performance (0.005% distortion, 115 dB dynamic range) and efficiency (92%).

Method and apparatus for clock timing recovery in χDSL particularly VDSL modems

Method and modem for fast timing recovery of transmitted data between a master χDSL modem and a slave χDSL modem, over a noisy, high loss, high distortion wiring. Transmitted QAM symbols are received and sampled at the slave modem. The sampled data is split into in-phase and quadrature channel, each of which is filtered by matched filter. The filtered outputs are sampled at twice the symbol rate and the lower and upper band edge components are extracted by modulating each of the sampled sequences of outputs with two discrete time sequences: cos(0.5 π n)=. . . 1,0,−1,0 . . . and sin(0.5 π n)=. . . 0,1,0,−1 . . . . Each of the resulting products is filtered with a first order low-pass filters and re-sampled again at the symbol rate. The Bit Error Rate is computed, and the slave modem switches from blind timing recovery mode, to data directed timing recovery mode, after the Bit Error Rate has sufficiently decreased.

Method and apparatus for reducing the effect of AGC switching transients

The present invention reduces automatic gain control (AGC) transients using first and second AGC processing branches to receive a signal. A gain is selectively adjusted (if desired) in the one of the AGC processing branches during a first time period. However, a gain is not adjusted in the other AGC processing branch during that first time period. The signals generated by the first and second AGC processing branches are then diversity processed to generate a received signal. The diversity processing effectively reduces the effect of any AGC transient.

Automatic gain control circuit

A first signal path including a first LNA 3 and a second signal path including an antenna damping circuit 4 and a second LNA 5 are connected in parallel, and switching into either the first signal path or the second signal path is carried out to control a gain of a received signal. When a level of the received signal is higher than a first threshold, it is once attenuated by the antenna damping circuit 4 and is then amplified by a necessary quantity through the second LNA 5. Thus, the gain of the received signal is controlled in a total of the attenuation and the amplification. Consequently, a level of a signal to be input to the second LNA 5 is reduced to cause a distortion of the signal in the amplification with difficulty.

Systems and methods for far-end noise reduction and near-end noise compensation in a mixed time-frequency domain compander to improve signal quality in communications systems

Methods and systems for a mixed time-frequency domain compander, where the expander and compressor are applied in the frequency domain (subbands), while the limiter and the linear gain are applied in the time-domain (full band). Far-end noise reduction is achieved by adapting the expander gain to the far-end noise, near-end noise compensation is achieved by adapting the linear gain and the compressor gain to the near-end noise. The range of the linear gain section is set individually for each subband, but the linear gain is essentially applied to the full band signal via a scaling procedure. The scaling procedure first reduces the compander gain in the frequency domain by a scaling factor and then performs the reciprocal reverse scaling in the time domain. Far-end noise reduction is coupled to near-end noise compensation in order to avoid cross-modulation of the far-end noise by the near-end noise.
