Microbiota-driven age-related development of metabolic syndrome has been observed in studies interrogating immune pathways that regulate microbiota composition. In this model, expansion of Desulfovibrio and loss of Clostridia are important features associated with obesity, and replacement of Clostridia rescues obesity. T cell-dependent events are required to prevent the loss of Clostridia and the expansion of Desulfovibrio.
