Abstract

A grab rail (10) comprises an elongated central gripping region (12) extending in a linear direction and two ends (14). Each end includes an elbow structure (18) extending from and adjoining the gripping region, through a direction generally transverse to the gripping region and terminating in a surface engaging structure (20). The central gripping region (12) comprises a photoluminescent material that accumulates energy under normal or daylight conditions and automatically emits light under dim light conditions to emit light in darkness. The grab rail does not require a power supply, provides enhanced visibility under dim or dark light conditions, and is particularly useful in nursing facilities and places where people are inconvenient to move.
