Embodiment Construction

[0034] Some embodiments of the present invention will be described below without limiting the apparatus and method of the present invention.

[0035] Fig. 1 shows the structure of an embodiment of the cross-language retrieval system designed according to the present invention.

[0036] This device includes an input section 11 , an output section 12 , a registration section 13 , a retrieval section 14 , a translation section 15 and a literal translation section 16 .

[0037] Here, the input section 11 and the output section 12 correspond to a user interface of a computer, and correspond in hardware to an input device such as a keyboard or a mouse and an output device such as a computer monitor. On the other hand, the registration section 13, the retrieval section 14, the translation section 15, and the literal translation section 16 correspond to programs of a computer.

[0038] The following will first describe the overview of the entire processing flow of this device, and th...

Abstract

The invention provides a cross language information retrieval device and method. The machine translation section machine-translates the retrieval request input in the input section into the same language as the retrieval target document. The literal translation part converts phonetic symbols that cannot be translated by the machine translation part in the retrieval request into phonetic symbols in the same language as the retrieval target document. The retrieval part retrieves documents including these retrieval words from the document database according to the retrieval words generated by the machine translation part and the retrieval words provided by the literal translation part.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is based on and claims priority from prior Japanese Patent Application No. 2002-092925 filed on March 28, 2002, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a cross-language information retrieval system (cross-language information retrieval system) that realizes retrieval when the language of a retrieval request and the language of a retrieval target document are different from each other. Background technique [0004] In recent years, the need for cross-lingual information retrieval has increased, for example searching English documents in Japanese, or searching in English from databases containing French, German or Spanish documents. [0005] The above-mentioned applied methods can be roughly divided into the following three categories (1) to (3): [0006] (1) Translate the search request into the language of the search ...
