Embodiment Construction

[0045] Fig. 3 shows a system overview of the self-servo writing device. The system consists of circuit blocks including a radial propagation controller 2 , a timing propagation controller 4 and a pattern generator 6 . The system is connected to a magnetic disk storage device 8 via a read / write transducer 10 and a transmission mechanism 12 that controls the position of the read / write transducer. The disc can be patterned with servo information using only an electronic connection from the servo writing device.

[0046] A commonly used servo configuration known as "preset servo" in which servo pattern information is present on all disk surfaces is typically used in disk drives. The double revolution clock propagation process described here and in Patent Application Serial No. 08 / 028,044 is used to turn on the servo pattern generator 6 to write servo patterns on all surfaces. It is important to achieve such a capability at the lowest rpm when the servo writer is external to the ...

Abstract

A process for self servowriting a rotating disk in a disk drive including a head positioned for interaction with the disk, comprising the steps of: writing a first set of trigger patterns on a first track; determining a read to write time delay; determining an index correction value; determining at least one random error correction value; computing a set of delay values which are a function of said read to write time delay, said index correction value and said at least one random error correction value; triggering from said first set of trigger patterns and writing a second set of trigger patterns on a subsequent track using said delay values.

Description

technical field [0001] This application is related to serial number "A Method and System for Writing Servo Patterns on a Storage Medium" by T. Chainer et al., filed March 8, 1993, commonly assigned with this application and incorporated herein by reference U.S. Patent Application Ser. No. 08 / 028,044. This application is also related to US Patent Application Serial No. 349028, Attorney No. Y0994-253, filed December 2, 1994 by E. Yarmchuk et al., which is incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0002] The present invention relates generally to storage devices for hard drive storage of computers. In particular, it relates to a magnetic disk drive and a method for writing servo track information therein. More particularly, the present invention relates to establishing servo patterns on a recording surface of a recording medium while reducing the need for complex mechanisms and / or optical positioning systems. [0003] As described in International Patent Appli...
