Embodiment Construction

[0035] The invention will more particularly be directed to elements which form part of, or co-act more directly with, the device according to the invention. It is to be understood that elements not specifically shown or described may take various forms well known to those skilled in the art.

[0036] now refer to figure 1 , which shows a CIE chromaticity diagram in the u', v' coordinate space, where the horseshoe boundary 100 shows the color gamut limit determined by human color vision. Note: the quadrilateral 106 defined by the four vertices 116, 114, 112, 108 of the red, green, blue and blue-green saturated primaries forms a color gamut nearly equal to that of the human visual system. Displays employing four light sources would be able to take advantage of this enhanced color gamut to form images and provide a more realistic reproduction of the original scene, but would ideally require a fourth color signal that conventional camera equipment does not have. Simply put, a f...

Abstract

An imaging camera apparatus (20) for capturing images electronically and providing output data for four separate color channels, red, green, blue, and a fourth saturated primary color, expanding the color gamut over conventional three color channel cameras. An image acquisition unit (120) directs input light to one, two, or four photosensors (30) for obtaining four-color image data.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to color imaging devices, and more particularly to the application of a four-color receiver of an electronic camera to increase the color gamut of a captured image. technical background [0002] Recent electronic camera designs typically employ planar CCD and CMOS type sensors. In order to utilize these sensor types to provide a sequence of color image frames where each frame has full color content, one of two approaches is taken. In one approach, three separate sensor arrays are provided with either a red, green or blue filter preceding each sensor array. Alternatively, prisms may be used to split the incident light into three colors, providing each color to a separate unfiltered sensor array. This first method provides a three-color red, green and blue (RGB) value for each pixel. [0003] The second method uses a single sensor array and places a color filter array (CFA) over the sensor array so that red, gre...
