Problems solved by technology

[0011] Both methods are inconvenient because in the first alternative the call may fail and in the second alternative the MS performance cannot be fully utilized
Thus, the current situation is unacceptable

example 1

[0086] · MS supports multimedia. The MS has previously placed a call in the network it is currently roaming in, and found that the network supports CS multimedia (multi-step bearer, multimedia signaling), TCH / F14.4 channel coding and multi-slot configuration (on the other hand, in MS( MT (Mobile Terminal) or SIM (Subscriber Identity Module), the network capabilities of each network are pre-configured).

[0087] • The MS receives a call setup with no service indication. The MS reports a BCIE requesting a 28.8 kbit / s multimedia call with a modem (ie, ITC = 3.1 kHz) and with a 2*TCH / F14.4 channel configuration.

[0088] • If the called party is indeed requesting a multimedia call, the call is established as a multimedia call. If the called party is requesting a voice call, the call will fall back to voice (see 3GPP TS 29.007, 24.008 and 27.001).

example 2

[0090] • The MS has just placed a call to the intranet access server, which will call back after an identity check. In the call just made to the access server, or in some previous call in the network, the MS has found that the network supports TCH / F14.4, multi-slot, opaque connection, UDI and V.120 protocols. (On the other hand, the network capabilities of each network may have been pre-configured in the MS (MT or SIM)).

[0091] • The setup message for the callback sent by the server does not contain the service definition. The MS reports the BCIE requesting opaque 28.8kbit / s, UDI / V.120 multi-slot calls with 2*TCH / F14.4 channel configuration.

example 3

[0093] • In the network in which it is roaming, the MS has previously received a call and found that the network supports TCH / F14.4, multislot, opaque connections, ITC = 3.1 kHz (modem), but does not support UDI. (On the other hand, the network capabilities of each network may have been pre-configured in the MS (MT or SIM)).

[0094] ·The user makes a call to the local network, the default setting is opaque 56kbit / s with 3*TCH / F14.4 channel configuration, UDI / V.120 multi-slot.

[0095] • The MS automatically sets up an opaque, 3.1 kbit / s adaptive modem with 2*TCH / F14.4 channel configuration to match the capabilities of the visited network.

Abstract

The invention proposes a method of controlling a network to which a communication device is connected, comprising the steps of obtaining (S13) connection capability information from the network and evaluating (S14) a connection service based on to the obtained connection capability information. The invention also proposes a correspondingly adapted communication device. Thus, network capabilities related failures may be eliminated since the communication device is aware of the relevant connection capabilities in the network etc.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method of controlling a network to which a communication device is connected, and also to adapting the communication device accordingly. Background technique [0002] Mobile stations require a great deal of information about the network used and the capabilities of the called or calling party. This information is usually available during the call setup signaling phase. However, this is not always the case. When information is lost, service and bearer layer compatibility cannot be achieved during call setup, and the call fails. This problem is described in more detail below. [0003] A mobile network may support multiple numbering plans or Single Numbering Plan (SNS) or both (see 3GPP TS 29.007). At the beginning of the GSM era, commercial networks started with a multi-numbering scheme, but later several operators came up with a single-numbering scheme, despite the problems mentioned (and overcome) below. [0004] In a mu...
