Embodiment Construction

[0016] FIG. 1 depicts an escalator system 10 . As will be apparent from the ensuing description, the invention can also be used in other passenger conveyors such as moving walkways. The escalator system 10 generally includes a frame 12 that extends between a descending landing 14 and an ascending landing 16 . A plurality of successively connected pedals 18 are connected to a toothed chain 20 and pass through a closed annular passage within the frame 12 . A pair of rails 24 includes exercise handrails 24 . The drive mechanism 26 is generally located within a mechanism space 28 below the upper landing 16 , however, an additional mechanism space 28 ′ may be located below the lower landing 14 . As will be described further below, the drive mechanism 26 preferably passes through a drive belt 30 ( figure 2 ) to drive the pedal 18 and the armrest 24.

[0017] see figure 2 , which depicts the institutional space 28 . The pedal 18 makes a 180° change of direction in the turning a...

Abstract

An escalator drive machine includes a motor output sheave connected to a drive motor through a belt reduction assembly including a main output sheave. A drive belt extends from the belt reduction assembly and is guided along a plurality of guide sheaves to engage the step chain and propel the escalator tread plates. In addition, by locating a pinch roller adjacent the handrail, the drive belt and handrail can be pinched together to provide a motive force to the handrail. The drive belt thereby synchronously drives the handrail. In another embodiment the drive machine includes a counter-rotating motor to drive a drive belt on each side of the escalator system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a passenger conveyor system, and more particularly to a drive mechanism including a drive belt that advances the treads of an escalator. Background technique [0002] A typical passenger conveyor, such as an escalator or moving walkway, includes a frame, multiple railings with moving handrails, multiple treads, a drive system, and a toothed chain to propel the treads. The frame in turn includes framing parts on its left and right sides. Each frame section has two ends connected by a sloped middle and forming a landing. The landings are usually fitted with an escalator drive system or mechanism positioned between the frames. [0003] An escalator drive system usually consists of a toothed chain, a toothed chain drive sprocket, a shaft and a drive motor. The toothed chain passes through a continuous closed loop, thus moving from one level to another and back. A drive motor drives the chain, and the final drive is usua...
