An encoding framework that provides conversion between one or more video formats without the use of transcoders. A stream of video information including color information formatted according to a first color space sampling format is split into a base stream and an enhancement stream. The base stream is formatted according to the second color space sampling format. The enhancement stream includes enhancement information that reconstructs the first format when combined with the base stream. During encoding, the enhancement stream may be encoded using spatial information related to the base information stream. The output streams of the coded base stream and the coded enhancement stream may be interleaved, concatenated, or include separate files for the coded base stream and the coded enhancement stream.
