Example Embodiment

[0023] The present invention provides a system including a patellofemoral joint replacement device, a series of instruments, and a method for implanting the patellofemoral joint replacement device using the instrument.

[0024] The patellofemoral joint replacement device roughly includes two connecting parts, a femoral implant, and Figure 2A -The knee bone implant represented by 12 in B, where the femoral implant is in Figure 1A -C is indicated by the symbol 10.

[0025] From Figure 1A It is clearly seen in C that the femoral implant 10 is designed to replace the anterior surface of the distal part of the patient's femur. The femoral implant 10 includes an anatomically shaped upper surface 14 with a generally concave joint groove 16 oriented centrally and longitudinally.

[0026] From Figure 1A It is clearly shown in Figure that the underside 18 of the femoral implant 10 includes at least one but preferably a plurality of recesses 20, at least one intramedullary rod 22, and an...

Abstract

The present invention provides a patellofemoral prosthesis (10) that provides smooth articulation of the articulating surfaces throughout the full range of motion. At the same time, the present invention also provides a novel structure of the femoral implant component (12) that facilitates super-strong bonding to the femoral head. Also available is a patellofemoral arthroplasty system that utilizes precise, reproducible bone preparation techniques that are unique in that they minimize the complexity of subsequent revision and complete knee arthroplasty procedures. The present invention also provides a drill guide (90) and a cutting guide (44), each of which is configured to provide three-point stability during surgery.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to novel orthopedic joint replacement implants and methods, and in particular to improved methods for performing patellofemoral joint replacements through simpler, less invasive surgical procedures using instrumented, reproducible incisions methods and systems. Background technique [0002] Patellofemoral replacement is a well known orthopedic surgery. Various conventional joint replacement devices have been used since the seventies, however, unlike artificial joints commonly used in total knee replacement surgery, conventional patellofemoral replacement devices have not gained widespread acceptance in the orthopedic field . This may be due to somewhat mixed clinical results, which have been demonstrated for conventional patellofemoral arthroplasties in the relevant medical literature. This conventional prosthesis typically includes a femoral component, which is a large, bulky device that is contoured to fit w...
