Knee prosthesis with extended range of motion

In a knee prosthesis, the condylar surfaces of a femoral component engage corresponding articular surfaces of a tibial component along prescribed tracks of predetermined curvature which enable relative rotation between the femoral component and the tibial component about a longitudinal axis during articulation of the knee prosthesis, and at least the condylar surfaces or the articular surfaces are flared in a direction away from corresponding articular surfaces or condylar surfaces along engaged posterior and anterior portions of the condylar surfaces and articular surfaces to provide an increased area of contact in deep flexion and in extended hyperextension for reducing contact stresses and concomitant wear while militating against unwanted distraction of the knee prosthesis. In addition, the radius of curvature of the condylar surfaces is reduced along posterior portions of the condylar surfaces to further avoid distraction of the knee prosthesis in deep flexion, thereby enabling deep flexion with greater ease and without excessive contact forces between the femoral component and the tibial component in deep flexion.

Spinal tension and pressure relieving body support apparatus

A therapeutic support apparatus comprises multiple layers of foam having different densities and memories. The support apparatus comfortably supports the weight of a user while minimizing pressure points between the user and the support apparatus. Each foam layer has a unique density and memory based upon the type of tissue the layer is intended to support. A relatively low-memory outer foam layer made from latex non-viscoelastic foam substantially supports skin and subcutaneous tissue. A relatively high-density and medium-memory intermediate layer made from polyurethane foam supports muscle tissue. A relatively high-density and high-high memory core layer made from polyurethane foam supports the spine. In combination, these layers minimize hyperextension and promote blood circulation and comfort while the support apparatus is used by a user positioned in a supine, recumbent, or sideways-lying position.

Intubation positioning, breathing facilitator and non-invasive assist ventilation device

This invention can be used in three different ways for patients who are lying down in bed or on the operating table. First it facilitates the endotracheal intubation, secondly it facilitates the spontaneous breathing of obese patients and thirdly it assists the spontaneous inspiration and expiration in a non-invasive way. This invention device is positioned under the patient before he is asleep without disturbing him. It allows a gradual elevation of the lower and or upper thorax, a gradual elevation of the head giving a flexion of the neck and a gradual hyperextension of the head. After intubation the position is returned to normal without need for removing the invention device. This invention elevates the spinal column and therefore the thorax is no more compressed and the ribs can move free. Inspiration requires less force and the patient can be breathing easier even when lying down. In this invention the spinal column elevation can also be inflated in a synchronized way with the respiration of the patient. During inspiration the spinal column is elevated, facilitating the inspiration. During expiration the elevation is lowered, facilitating the expiration. The work of breathing is reduced for the patient resulting in larger minute volume ventilation or less oxygen consumption.

A protective pad including a rigid shell bounded by a perimeter and a gasket engaging the perimeter so that forces applied to the shell are dissipated through the gasket before transferring to a wearer of the protective pad. The rigid shell cooperates with the gasket to provide a trampoline effect or two way spring. This effectively absorbs shock from forces generated by the opponent, so that the wearer and a colliding opponent both encounter reduced forces. The shell can bow outwardly to form a cavity above the wearer when the gasket is placed adjacent the wearer, which can prevent the rigid shell from bottoming out against the wearer upon impact. The protective pad can be implemented in a thumb protector including a stopper disposed between adjacent rigid shells covering proximal and distal portions of a digit. The stopper can engage the shells and effectively prevent hyperextension of the digit.
