The present invention is a transfer and transport device and method for moving a patient from a bed to another location within a medical facility. The transport device includes an integral transfer mechanism for transferring a patient from a hospital bed to the device and back.

A disposable patient transfer mattress includes a rectangular top sheet, a rectangular bottom sheet, internal baffles, and a receptacle configured to receive a connector for supplying air to inflate the mattress. The bottom sheet corresponds to the top sheet, and the periphery of the bottom sheet is joined to the periphery of the top sheet. The internal baffles extend between the top sheet and the bottom sheet. Each baffle is a rectangular sheet with first and second parallel edges, and each baffle is joined to the top sheet along the first edge and to the bottom sheet along the second edge. A method for transferring a patient from a first surface to a second surface includes providing a winch having a drive system and two reels operatively coupled to the drive system. Two straps are attached to each of the reels. Two wedge cushions are provided for pushing the patient in the direction of the winch from the first surface to the second surface. The wedge cushions have a cover, an insert and an attachment mechanism for attaching them to the straps. The wedge cushions are thinner at the attachment mechanism end. The first of the two straps is passed beneath the patient and is attached to a first wedge cushion. The second of the two straps is passed beneath the patient and is attached to another wedge cushion. The invention discloses a patient transferring device which is used for transferring patients between different platforms. The patient transferring device comprises two supporting frames, a beam which is used for connecting two supporting frames, a sling which is slidingly arranged at the beam and can realize lifting up and down to transfer patients, a lifting device which drives the sling to move up and down, a horizontally moving device which drives the sling to horizontally move, a rolling mechanism which is arranged at the bottom of two supporting frames and an electrical control system which is used for controlling the lifting device and the horizontally moving device. A gurney mounting such a patient transfer mechanism also is described.

A patient support device. The support device includes a first side for contacting a surface, the first side having a perimeter portion and an inner portion. The support device further includes a second side for contacting a patient, the second side having a perimeter portion and an inner portion. The support devices also includes at least one baffle interconnected between the first and second sides. When in an unloaded state, the perimeter portion of the first side is in contact with the surface and the inner portion of the first side is spaced a first distance away from the surface. When in a loaded state the perimeter portion of the first side is in contact with the surface and the inner portion of the first side is spaced a second distance away from the surface. The second distance is less than the first distance.

A patient transfer device has four casters and two counter-rotating steering wheels. The steering wheels provide a turning path whose center of curvature lies along a transverse centerline of the device. A foot pedal selectively lifts the steering wheels off the floor or brakes them. Another foot pedal at a back end of the device can lock the casters at the front end in a straight direction. A patient lifting system is provided having a vest component adjustably proportioned to fit upon the torso of a patient, and a leg belt component adapted to embrace the patient's legs just below the knees. A caregiver utilizes the lifting system by standing in front of the patient while pulling upon the vest and applying pushing force with his knee upon the leg belt. Such action causes the leg belt to act as a fulcrum which redirects the pulling force upwardly to lift the patient.
