[0014] Disclosed herein is a process for the oxidation of cyclohexane that will generally produce an NVR by-product with a low Cr content. In the process of the present invention, cyclohexane is contacted with air in an air oxidizer (1) at a temperature of about 100°C to about 175°C. Air oxidizers can be oxidation towers, stirred or non-stirred tank reactors, stirred or non-stirred autoclaves. The air oxidizer wake is in contact with water. The ratio of air oxidizer wake to water was about 100:1. After separation of the aqueous phase (2), the cyclohexyl hydroperoxide is decomposed into K and A (3).

Background of the invention [0002] Oxidation of cyclohexane by air produces a reaction product containing cyclohexanol (A), cyclohexanone (K), cyclohexyl hydroperoxide (CHHP) and minor by-products. The reaction product was treated with water, and the organic and aqueous phases were separated. The organic phase containing A, K and CHHP is further processed to decompose CHHP into K and A. Therefore, K and A are the main products of the whole process, and their mixture is commonly called "KA-oil".
