At the mobile terminal transmitter 101 , data packets at the input 102 to be transmitted via the PDCH uplink to the base station receiver 103 are processed by a CRC calculation and attachment device 104 . Based on an input data packet, device 104 appends CRC bits to bits in the data packet, and the resulting bits are encoded by turbo encoder 105, which is a device well known in the art. An interleaver 106 interleaves the encoded data against correlated fading channels, and a subpacket shaper 107 reorganizes the interleaved data into three subpackets. The bits in each subpacket are sufficient to allow the receiver at input 101 to reconstruct the data packet.
