Abstract

A system and method are disclosed which enable a more accurate estimate of the soot concentration in the oil of an engine 5 to be established. This estimate can be used to alert a user of the engine 5 when the oil needs to be changed and to control removal of soot from the oil. The invention also provides a method for alerting an operator of the engine 5 when a soot removal filter 16 needs to be changed. Soot production is determined by sensors which measure the engine speed and the load.
