[0018] The inventive arrangements disclosed herein provide methods and apparatus involving user-computer interaction using a multimodal interface. According to an embodiment of the present invention, visual identifiers may be provided in the multimodal interface to indicate to the user those data entry fields in the multimodal interface that are voice-enabled. Each visual identifier can also act as a virtual "push to talk" (PTT) button, since activation of the identifier can indicate that voice processing resources should be activated to process the user's voice. Activation of a visual identifier may also indicate that any received user speech will be provided to the field associated with the activated visual identifier.
