Problems solved by technology

However, the incorporation of such surge protectors adds considerably to the complexity in manufacturing and, therefore, increases the cost of the interconnection unit
Also, if the connector unit experiences voltage surges higher than the protector is designed to handle, it will definitely need to be replaced

Embodiment Construction

[0028] Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the drawings, it can be seen in FIG. In the cable interconnection device. Circuit board 10 is comprised of a non-conductive substrate (eg, a fiberglass ceramic substrate) having a pair of parallel planar surfaces, with a layer of conductive material (eg, copper) coated on at least one of its planar surfaces 14 . A series of electrical components, shown generally at reference numeral 16, are mounted to either planar surface of board 10 in a conventional manner.

[0029] Interconnect 12 acts, for example, as a wave trap having electrical components 16 comprising filters with a narrow pass band response over a predetermined frequency range (eg, 5-40 MHz). ), the predetermined frequency range has a fixed level of attenuation on the return path spectrum. Such devices are commonly used in CATV networks.

[0030] Referring particularly to Figures 3 and 4, the interconnection device...

Abstract

An over-voltage surge protection device includes a circuit board having a signal carrying conductive member with a plurality of nodes positioned therealong, and a conductive member running to ground positioned therealong. The nodes on the signal carrying member and the ground conductive member each extend along a common path with corresponding ones of the signal carrying nodes positioned in adjacent, but spaced relation to the ground member, wherein the conductive member running to ground is formed along the interior of the main body enclosing the circuit board and the signal carrying conductive member. The peripheral edges of the nodes accumulate and discharge transient high voltage surges. The nodes can be shaped in the form of triangles due to this particular geometry's favorable ability to accumulate and discharge voltage, but may also be formed in a variety of other geometries.
