The individual's raw biometric data, such as fingerprints, iris or retina, face or hand geometry, voice characteristics, etc., are obtained on the sensor 101 . The acquired data is typically processed on a processing device 102, such as a digital signal processor (DSP). This data is then stored in the service provider's database 103, preferably in encrypted form. This is a one-time initialization process for an individual wishing to access a particular system in order to register that individual. Encryption is performed to protect the identity of the individual, i.e. the individual's biological data.
