If the wireless device is running a latency-sensitive application (also referred to herein as a low-latency application), pre-authentication is performed and latency is reduced during handover between wireless access points. Such low-latency applications include: voice over IP, video, interactive whiteboards, video teleconferencing. On the other hand, if the wireless device is not running a low-latency application, the wireless device is less sensitive to latency when a wireless access point switch occurs.
