Problems solved by technology

However, since the Check Engine light itself does not specifically indicate a leak problem, diagnosing a leak at the gas cap is time consuming and inconvenient, especially as loose caps are often the result of user error

Embodiment Construction

[0012] FIG. 5 shows components within a capless filler nozzle system 100 with a latch assembly 101 that secures and seals a flapper 102 in an opening 104 of the filler nozzle. An opening 104 for the fuel filler nozzle is formed in a support 106 that supports the latch assembly 101 . The flapper 102 itself may be in the form of any movable door that closes the opening 104 of the filler neck. In one embodiment, the baffle 102 has a seal 107 formed around its perimeter to form an airtight seal when the baffle 102 is locked to the support 106 by the latch assembly 101 . The shutter 102 is movable between an open position and a closed position.

[0013] The latch assembly 101 itself includes a movable plate 110 that slides or otherwise moves on top of the support 106 between a released position and a locked position. It should be noted that while the illustrated embodiment shows a sliding plate 110, the plate 110 may be moved in any manner to lock the latch assembly 101 without d...

Abstract

A capless filler neck creates a vapor-tight closure for a fuel system using a spring-loaded door and a latch structure that anchors the door to create a vapor-tight seal. The filler neck includes a spring that biases the door shut and a wedge arrangement that acts as the latching structure. The wedge arrangement includes a movable plate that selectively engages with the door to pull the door shut with sufficient force to form and maintain the vapor-tight seal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a filler tube closure, and more particularly to an airtight closure for a fuel tank. Background technique [0002] Vehicle emissions standards are becoming more stringent due to increased awareness of the negative environmental impact of hydrocarbons emitted into the atmosphere through fuel vapors. For vehicles and other fuel-operated devices, controlling and suppressing fuel vapors is very important in reducing emissions. Most vehicles include an on-board diagnostic system that monitors whether the fuel system is completely airtight. While it is relatively easy to generate vapors when fuel is already in the fuel system, most vapors are generated by the refueling process, not while the vehicle is running. Previous studies have shown that the refueling process produces more hydrocarbon emissions than the actual combustion of the full tank of fuel. [0003] More specifically, the refueling process requires the user to ...
