Problems solved by technology

[0007] Another disadvantage of known knee braces is that they are considered by the wearer to be heavy, hot and too large
Most stands are expensive and contain complex hinge mechanisms and straps
It has been found that these braces sometimes do not always work or treat the knee as desired, either because they simply do not stabilize the knee or are not sufficiently secured to the leg
Also, some braces continuously impede the wearer's movement as they wear, and do not provide selective correction when such correction is only intermittently required

Abstract

A knee brace (100) adapted for placement over at least a posterior side of a leg and comprising a first posterior frame member (102), a second posterior frame member (104) connected to first frame member, and a posterior resilient hinge device (106) located at or near a first end portion (118) of the first frame member (102). The hinge device (106) is arranged to urge the first and second frame members (102, 104) into a predetermined alignment. The hinge device (106) can be arranged for selectively locking the second frame member (104) at an angle relative to the first frame member (102), and permitting rotation of the second frame member (104) relative to first frame member (102) within a range of predetermined angles.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to orthopedic devices, especially knee braces. Background technique [0002] Knee braces are used to stabilize the knee by preventing excessive motion of the knee or to facilitate knee movement. Most braces include struts and have hinges on at least one of the lateral and medial sides of the knee joint. Straps are used to secure the brace to the leg or knee. By selecting the type of brace based on the size and shape of the individual leg, the injured knee can be accommodated with either an off-the-shelf brace or a custom fit brace. [0003] Most knee braces are designed to reduce instability due to knee injury, fatigue, or to treat knee injuries, especially if there are damaged ligaments in the knee. Knee braces are recommended for activities such as walking, skiing, running, twisting, spinning or jumping. In addition to improving knee stability, knee braces can also reduce the risk of knee or leg injury, or provide additiona...
