Embodiment Construction

[0016] Embodiments of the invention are described with reference to various examples of how the embodiments may be best made and used. The same reference numerals are used throughout the description and several views of the drawings to indicate like or corresponding parts, wherein various elements are not necessarily drawn to scale. Now specific reference figure 1 , which illustrates an exemplary Ethernet environment 100 having a Stackable Ethernet Switch System (SESS) 102 in which embodiments of the present invention may be implemented. At the outset, it should be recognized that Ethernet environment 100 is representative of any known or heretofore unknown Ethernet implementation with well-known Layer 2 or Layer 2 / 3 functionality, or any other comparative implementation according to the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. One or more Ethernet nodes of upper layer functions are interconnected together in a communication network. Thus, for example, Ethernet environment...

Abstract

A loop prevention system applied in a stackable Ethernet switch system (SESS) and a method thereof are disclosed. In an embodiment, the logic for detecting the control management traffic on the stack port of a stackable switch element of the SESS is provided. The invention further comprises logics for responding the loss of the control management traffic on the stack port of the switch element of the SESS, to keep the open of the path of the control management traffic and activate the client traffic data on the stack port.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application discloses subject matter related to that disclosed in the following commonly-owned co-pending patent applications: (I) "STACKMANAGER PROTOCOL WITH AUTOMATIC SETUP MECHANISM" (Alcatel Vol. 134196); (II) "VIRUAL CHASSIS FOR CONTINUOUS SWITCHING" in the name of Harpal Mann and Vincent Magret (Alcatel Vol. 13458), which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to communication networks. More particularly, but without limitation, the present invention relates to loop prevention systems and methods for use with stackable Ethernet switch systems. Background technique [0004] In a data communication network based on Ethernet technology, packet switches, including multilayer switches and routers, are used to operatively connect many nodes for communication of information packets therebetween. A switch made independent of a shared backplane has mul...
