Problems solved by technology

While pump-driven filters can be smaller, current flat disc filters provide the smallest footprint required in a gravity-driven filtration system suitable for the above applications
[0007] While pleated filter media is commonly used in applications for filtering gases such as air, due to the higher viscosity of the fluid, such pleated filter media are somewhat limited in fluid applications to low flow applications and contain small amounts of solid level fluid
High flow rates create large pressure drops that tend to distort the pleats, leading to media tearing or loss of other functionality unless properly handled by the designer

Embodiment Construction

[0054] Before any embodiment of the invention is explained in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in application to the details of construction and the arrangement of components set forth in the following description or shown in the drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced and carried out in various ways. For example, the teachings of the present invention do not apply only to disc filters, but are applicable to drum-type and other types of filters used to filter large volume, high solids fluids. The teachings of the present invention apply not only to "inside-out" type filters where hydraulic head differences are the driving force for filtration, but also to vacuum type filters, including "outside-in" type filters, and in Filters run in closed vessels under pressure. Filters of the type described above are exemplified and described in more detail in the handbook titled REX MICROSCREENS (dated 08 / 98), publishe...

Abstract

A filter device is configured to filter a liquid. The filter device includes a drum sized to receive the liquid and a plurality of filter panels coupled to the drum to define a plurality of discs. The liquid passes through at least a portion of one of the discs. Each filter panel includes a perimeter frame that defines a panel normal flow area and a filter media coupled to the perimeter frame. The filter media may be adapted to include a plurality of pleats.

Description

[0001] relevant application data [0002] Pursuant to Section 119(e) of U.S.C. 35, this application claims the benefit of the co-pending U.S. provisional application No. 60 / 822,305, filed August 14, 2006; U.S. Provisional Application No. 60 / 950,484, filed July 18, 2007; and U.S. Provisional Application No. 60 / 950,476, filed July 18, 2007, all of which are hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] The present invention relates to high flow filters and to certain embodiments relating to pleated filter media suitable for use in high flow compact disc filter configurations for filtering fluids. [0004] Conventional biological wastewater treatment plants typically incorporate settling clarifiers at the end of the treatment process to clean the effluent to a level sufficient to allow discharge into natural water bodies such as lakes or rivers. In areas of water scarcity, it is desirable to further filter and disinfect the water in order to allow safe "re-use"...
