Problems solved by technology

[0003] However, during the operational life of such equipment, changes in the equipment's natural resonant frequency, such as due to normal wear and tear of components, often result in reduced performance due to a mismatch between the drive frequency and the appliance's natural resonant frequency.
To date, there has been no way to correct for changes in the natural frequency of such appliances over time, and as a result, performance degradation of such equipment cannot be corrected during its lifetime and benefits degrade, leading to customer dissatisfaction or premature abandonment the appliance

Embodiment Construction

[0011] figure 1 An example of a gadget with a resonant dynamic drive system is shown. In particular, the appliance, shown generally at 10, is an electric toothbrush. However, it should be understood that other appliances with resonant drives may incorporate the system of the present invention. Examples of such implements include skin brushes, razors, and similar devices. The electric toothbrush 10 includes a drive motor 12 that drives a workpiece 14 for a desired motion at a drive frequency that is equal to or close to the natural resonant frequency of the appliance. An example of such an appliance is shown in US Patent No. 5,189,751, owned by the assignee of the present invention, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference.

[0012] The drive motor 12 is responsive to a drive control circuit 15 comprising a microprocessor having a software program and generating a motor drive signal having a drive frequency. The motor is powered by a battery 16, which may...

Abstract

An adaptive system for a resonantly driven appliance includes circuitry for measuring back EMF induced in a stator coil of a motor after the appliance is turned off. The frequency of the back EMF signal is determined from the zero crossings of the EMF signal. The determined frequency is then compared to a moving average of previous frequency determinations, and the drive frequency of the appliance is adjusted if the difference between the compared frequencies is greater than a threshold, eg 1 Hz.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to resonantly-driven small appliances, such as personal care appliances, and more particularly to systems for adapting the operation of such appliances over their lifetimes. Background technique [0002] In a resonant drive system, such as may be used to drive small appliances (eg, electric toothbrushes), the natural resonant frequency of the appliance is an important consideration regarding efficient operation of the appliance. When such an appliance is excited, it responds best at its natural resonant frequency, ie provides maximum output for a given input. In order to maximize efficiency, the drive frequency of the motor producing the operating motion is chosen to be at or close to the natural frequency of the appliance, for example a few Hz below the natural frequency of the device. [0003] However, during the operational life of such equipment, changes in the equipment's natural resonant frequency, such as...
