[0030] A data packet communication system employs a radio link control protocol for transmissions between a transmitter and a receiver. Radio Link Control provides Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) featuring a lossless transmission service by requesting receiver status and retransmitting lost data. Requests for receiver status are referred to as polling, and describe an arrangement by which polling of receivers is accomplished with a reduced amount of potentially redundant transmitted data. When a polling event occurs, such as the transmitter's transmit buffer is emptied, the polling timer expires, the RLC protocol data unit (PDU) count threshold is reached, or the number of significant transmitted bytes threshold is reached, the transmitter sends a message to the receiver. The computer sends a polling command. The poll command can be smaller than any RLC PDU by segmenting or re-segmenting already sent PDUs into variable length PDUs for sending smaller amounts of data.
