Embodiment Construction

[0012] Systems, apparatus, and methods are described herein to provide fast roaming within a wireless network that can support a large number of communication devices. The communication device may be, for example, a mobile electronic device, a personal computer, a notebook computer, a mobile phone and / or a handheld computer. The systems, apparatus and methods described herein may include, for example, multiple controllers, each of which may control and manage multiple access points within a separate control domain of a wireless network. Each of the access points may use radio frequency signals to identify communication devices within the connection range of the access point and to register the communication devices for further roaming activities within its range. The registration of the communication device may be performed across multiple control domains and access points within the network to provide a continuous connection to the network as the communication device roams wi...

Abstract

A system, device and method for highly scalable continuous roaming in a wireless network. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a first access point within a wireless network. The first access point is configured to identify communication devices within radio frequency (RF) range of the first access point. The first access point is further configured, in response to the identified communication device, to request a session key associated with the communication device from a first network controller associated with the first access point. The first access point is further configured to receive a session key associated with the communication device from a second network controller associated with a second access point, the radio frequency range of the second access point being the same as that of the first access point The RF ranges of the dots partially overlap.

Description

technical field [0001] Some embodiments described herein relate generally to wireless networks and, in particular, to systems and methods for providing seamless roaming within wireless networks. Background technique [0002] Some known wireless networks, such as wireless local area networks (LANs), contain autonomous access points that cannot communicate with each other within the network. In such networks, loss of network connectivity can occur when a mobile communication device moves out of range of one access point and into range of another access point. Other known wireless networks may include communication between access points, but are limited by the number of communication devices and access points that can be maintained in the network. For example, in some wireless networks, a copy of the communication device information for the fast roaming control domain is stored at all access points in the network. Such a network would be limited by the amount of memory availa...
