Embodiment Construction

[0049] The present invention is based on the discovery that tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens are expressed on cancer stem cells and thus serve as cancer stem cell markers. This finding was unexpected because almost all cancer stem cell markers described so far are proteins. Accordingly, the present invention relates to the use of a tumor-associated carbohydrate antigen, preferably a tumor-specific carbohydrate antigen, preferably selected from the group consisting of CD176, CD175, CD175s, CD174, CD173 and CA19-9, as a cancer stem cell marker , more preferably selected from CD176, CD175 and CD175s.

[0050] According to a first aspect, the present invention provides the use of a binding reagent that specifically binds to a tumor-associated carbohydrate antigen for treating cancer stem cells expressing said tumor-associated carbohydrate antigen.

[0051] The inventors have shown that several tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens such as CD176, CD174 and CD173 are express...

Abstract

The present invention pertains to therapeutic methods which are based on the use of an agent specifically binding a tumor-associated carbohydrate antigen for the treatment of cancer stem cells and related diseases. Also provided are diagnostic and prognostic methods using a tumor- associated carbohydrate antigen as marker for cancer stem cells.

Description

[0001] The present invention is particularly relevant to methods of treatment based on the use of agents that specifically bind tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens for the treatment of cancer stem cells and related diseases. Diagnostic and prognostic methods using tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens as cancer stem cell markers are also provided. Background of the invention [0002] Tumors can be viewed as abnormal organs initiated by tumorigenic cancer cells that require the ability to indefinitely proliferate through accumulated mutations. In understanding tumors as abnormal organs, principles of normal stem cell biology can be applied to better understand how tumors develop and spread. Numerous findings suggest that the analogy between normal stem cells and tumorigenic cells is appropriate. Both normal stem cells and tumorigenic cells have a strong proliferative potential and are able to generate new (normal or abnormal) tissue. Tumorogenic cells can be considered as...
