Embodiment Construction
[0028] figure 1 is a block diagram illustrating a portion of a web-based manufacturing system 10 operating in accordance with the principles of the present invention. In this particular example, a section of a web transfer system is shown, including a plurality of driven and idler rollers, moving a web 12 through the web transfer system.
[0029] In this example, the web-based manufacturing system 10 includes two microreplication tools 14A, 14B (collectively "tools 14"), one following the other. The microreplication tool produces a web 12 with microstructures that may, for example, extend continuously in the machine direction of the web, or may form other two-dimensional (2D) patterns that simply repeat as the tool rotates . Such configurations may be used, for example, in the manufacture of web 12 to include microreplicated structures having micron-scale dimensions.
[0030] In one example, web 12 is formed as a two-layer film with opposing microstructure patterns on the b...

Abstract
The present invention provides a sensing system that provides high resolution feedback for web guidance and tension control. The system is particularly useful for webs that are fabricated with microreplicated structures on the micron scale. The microreplication station forms a pattern of microreplicated lenses on the web. The sensing system illuminates a measurement zone on the web and detects the angular distribution of light exiting the set of microreplicated lenses within the first measurement zone. A control system adjusts at least one process control parameter of the conveyor system based on the detected angular distribution.
Description
technical field [0001] The present invention relates to web manufacturing technology. Background technique [0002] The manufactured web may be any sheet material having a fixed dimension in one direction and a predetermined or indeterminate length in an orthogonal direction. Examples of webs include, but are not limited to, metal, paper, fabric, non-woven, glass, polymer films, flexible circuits, or combinations thereof. Metals may include materials such as steel or aluminum. Fabrics generally include various cloths. Nonwovens include materials such as paper, filter media, or insulation. Films include, for example, clear and opaque polymeric films, including laminates and coated films. [0003] Web manufacturing processes typically utilize continuous feed manufacturing systems, such as those used to make paper, film, tape, etc., and typically include one or more rotatable mechanical components driven by motors, such as rolls, casting wheels, pulleys , gears, traction r...
