Abstract

A digital image capture device for use in capturing underwater digital images, comprises: a watertight housing; an image sensor for capturing a digital image; an optical system for imaging a scene onto the image sensor; a means for setting the digital image capture device to operate in an underwater photography mode or a normal photography mode; and a processor. The processor performs the steps of: capturing a digital image of a scene using the image sensor; controlling a color reproduction of the captured digital image responsive to whether the digital image capture device is operating in an underwater photography mode or a normal photography mode; and storing the captured digital image in a processor accessible memory.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of capturing digital images with an underwater camera, and more particularly relates to an underwater camera in which color reproduction is controlled in response to an object distance of a digital image captured in an underwater photography mode. Background technique [0002] Underwater photography is used in many applications. For example, scuba divers might want to snap photos while exploring a coral reef or shipwreck, and kids might enjoy taking photos of their friends underwater while playing in the pool. To take underwater photos, the camera must be enclosed in a waterproof housing to prevent water damage to the camera's internal components. [0003] It is a property of photographs taken underwater that water can affect various properties of the image, such as color reproduction, glare, image sharpness, and spatial noise (i.e., graininess). The degree to which these image properties are affected depend...
