As mentioned above, one challenge in implementing augmented reality is generating virtual images such that they appear realistic in real-world environments when viewed by a user through a wearable display device such as a head-mounted display (HMD). When a virtual image such as any type of object, video, text, graphics, etc. is displayed on a real environment, the virtual image appears semi-transparent to the user. Pixel Opacity for Augmented Reality provides a technique for enhancing the contrast of a virtual image relative to an image of the environment when the virtual image is displayed as appearing as part of the environment without requiring the virtual image to appear translucent.
