Embodiment Construction

[0015] This document describes techniques for establishing an active circuit between a sender device and a receiver device over a packet-switched network. As used herein, the term "active circuit" refers to a communication channel between two endpoint devices in which channel bandwidth is guaranteed. In contrast to conventional circuits, the efficient circuits discussed in this text do not require significant overhead for setup. By utilizing a packet-switched network with full bisection bandwidth or high bisection bandwidth, bandwidth reservation at intermediary devices becomes unnecessary. Bandwidth at the endpoints of the active circuit is ensured by limiting message transfer at the sender device and reserving bandwidth at the receiver device for messages to the sender device.

[0016] This disclosure exploits the observation that in high or fully bisected bandwidth networks, congestion occurs entirely at the end stations (sender and receiver devices) and not in the network...

Abstract

This article describes the creation of an efficient circuit between a sender device and a receiver device over a packet-switched network. To establish a valid circuit, the sender device sends a request to the receiver device over the packet-switched network. The request is associated with a bandwidth reservation from the recipient device for receiving messages from the sender device. A recipient device receives a plurality of requests from a plurality of sender devices and reserves bandwidth for at least one of the sender devices. The recipient device then sends a response to the at least one sender device, the response providing permission to use the reserved bandwidth to send a message to the recipient device, the request and response thereby establishing an active circuit. The recipient device may also deny requests from other sender devices, causing the other sender device to send other requests to other recipient devices.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to packet switching networks, and more particularly to efficient circuits in packet switching networks. Background technique [0002] Messages are often transmitted over packet-switched networks using the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) suite of protocols. TCP / IP uses a trial-and-error method to determine the path bandwidth for message transmission by the sender device. The rate at which the sender device sends messages increases until packet loss occurs. TCP / IP detects packet loss by noticing that no acknowledgments have been received for sent messages. Packet loss often results from events such as buffer overflows at intermediary or endpoint devices. After packet loss is detected, TCP / IP reduces the transmission rate and transmits messages at progressively higher rates until packet loss is detected again. While this approach works well for sending large numbers of messages between pairs of de...
