As used herein, the term "active circuit" refers to a communication channel between two endpoint devices in which channel bandwidth is guaranteed. In contrast to conventional circuits, the efficient circuits discussed in this text do not require significant overhead for setup. By utilizing a packet-switched network with full bisection bandwidth or high bisection bandwidth, bandwidth reservation at intermediary devices becomes unnecessary. Bandwidth at the endpoints of the active circuit is ensured by limiting message transfer at the sender device and reserving bandwidth at the receiver device for messages to the sender device.
