Problems solved by technology

As a disadvantage, it is necessary to obtain three-dimensional data from multiple sensors in order to classify the vehicle itself.
This increases the economic cost of detecting and processing data

Embodiment Construction

[0033] The method is based on the figure 1 The method steps shown schematically in , wherein the steps which are important for the method sequence according to the invention are shown in gray shaded boxes.

[0034] In a first step, a sequence of images of a vehicle moving on a roadway in flowing traffic is recorded with a camera directed at the roadway in a freely selectable but fixed installation position. The image sequence may consist of digitized individual images or may be a video sequence. An invariant image region detected in a sequence of images is then referred to as a scene.

[0035] In principle, a defined installation position relative to the vehicle is described by three distance values and three angle values at which the camera is oriented in a Cartesian coordinate system and views the scene. These six parameters are referred to as extrinsic parameters in the literature. The imaging of a scene in a camera corresponds to the principle of optical imaging and...

Abstract

The invention is directed to a method for classifying a moving vehicle. The object of the invention is to find a novel possibility for classifying vehicles moving in traffic which allows a reliable automatic classification based on two-dimensional image data. This object is met according to the invention in that an image of a vehicle is recorded by means of a camera and the position and perspective orientation of the vehicle are determined therefrom, rendered two-dimensional views are generated from three-dimensional vehicle models which are stored in a database in positions along an anticipated movement path of the vehicle and are compared with the recorded image of the vehicle, and the vehicle is classified from the two-dimensional view found to have the best match by assignment of the associated three-dimensional vehicle model.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method for classifying moving vehicles, which can be used in particular for reliable automatic classifying of vehicles which are captured by video-enabled traffic monitoring installations. Background technique [0002] Methods are known from the prior art in which external features are used to detect or classify vehicles. This method is often used to raise road maintenance fees depending on the category or in combination with devices for speed measurement, monitoring of speed limits. The signals of one or more sensors detecting the vehicle are usually evaluated with this method. Image sensors are very frequently used in order to simultaneously carry out the identification of the detected vehicle, which enable the evaluation of the license plate. [0003] According to the above example, it is mostly sufficient to roughly classify the detected vehicles into the classes of passenger cars and trucks. In EP1997090B1, the three-...
