Abstract

A method of tracking an IPv6 address of a device in a home network implemented by a network element, wherein the network element provides DHCPv6 service to the home network, and a home network router on the home network assigns an IPv6 address to the device using a prefix provided by the DHCPv6 service, The method includes: receiving a DHCPv6 request for prefix delegation from a home network router; sending a DHCPv6 message including an assigned prefix to the home network router, the DHCPv6 message including a request for notification of a configured IPv6 address; receiving a request from the home network router including for A first ICMP message of the configured device's MAC address and corresponding IPv6 address; and a second ICMP message to a home network router to confirm record for the configured device's IPv6 address, thereby enabling the network element to provide the configured device directly Serving and Forwarding Business.

Description

[0001] Related Application Cross Reference [0002] Cross-reference is made to co-pending patent application "ARCHITECTURE FOR VIRTUALIZED HOME IP SERVICE DELIVERY" by Wassim Haddad et al., filed on the same date as this application and commonly owned. The cross-referenced applications are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] Embodiments of the present invention relate to the allocation of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) addresses. In particular, embodiments of the present invention relate to apparatus for assigning IPv6 addresses by routers into a home network such that Internet service providers have visibility of assigned IPv6 addresses of upstream routers. Background technique [0004] A home network is used to connect devices in a home to each other and to the Internet. These home networks are connected to residential Internet service providers via a device called a Residential Gateway (RGW). This device is located between the home network an...
