A virtual private network is provided across a Provider Link State Bridging (PLSB) network between a first node connected to a private LAN and a second node connected to a roaming device. A system and method are described that allow for both call control data and voice data to be transferred between a mobile radiotelephone and a set-top box or residential gateway. A residential gateway (RG) for distributing multimedia services to residential and business premises is disclosed. The RG connects multiple communication devices, such as TVs, telephones, computers, security cameras, and utility billing devices, to an Ethernet based metro / access network through either an optic fiber or a coaxial cable. The RG multiplexes upstream data from various communication devices into Ethernet frames according to the said Fixed-bandwidth Multimedia to Ethernet (FibME) protocol, and transmit the Ethernet frames through the link between the RG and the metro network. Call signaling approach to user self-provisioning on VoIP using a touch-tone interface

A method for providing self-provisioning of VoIP telephony to a subscriber of a VoIP telephony service is disclosed. An un-provisioned residential gateway that is associated with the subscriber is instructed to collect a subscriber numeric identity that uniquely identifies the subscriber and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) information that are associated with the subscriber. An example of a subscriber numeric identity that uniquely identifies the subscriber is the subscriber's E.164 address. The E.164 address and Personal Identification Number (PIN) information is verified. A source IP address that is associated with one or more Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) messages that are sent by the residential gateway is used as a residential gateway IP address for the residential gateway. The residential gateway IP address is then used to provision the residential gateway that is associated with the subscriber. According to certain embodiments, the above steps are carried out by a call agent from a self-provisioning system of a provider of the VoIP telephony services. One or more VoIP connections are established between the residential gateway and an announcement server. The announcement server sends VoIP messages through the VoIP connections to the subscriber via the residential gateway. A protocol server offers the residential gateway, via a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, a limited access IP address, a location of one or more Domain Name System (DNS) servers, and a Media Gateway Protocol (MGCP) endpoint name of the call agent from the self-provisioning system.

Auto discovery and auto provisioning of set top boxes

A system and method for the automatic discovery and provisioning of a video set top box within an IPTV network is provided. When first connected to a residential gateway, the set top box requests the address information of the residential gateway. The set top box then sends a request to a video operations and support server (VOSS) with the identifying information for the set top box and the residential gateway. Once the VOSS determines that the residential gateway is authorized for video service, the VOSS associates the residential gateway with the set top box. The VOSS then communicates the authorization to a middleware server, which downloads client software and encryption keys to the set top box, enabling the set top box to request and receive video content. The set top box may be reconnected to any port on the residential gateway and receive video service without being re-provisioned.

System management functions are remotely performed on customer premises equipment (CPE), such a residential gateway, even if the CPE has not been authenticated or dynamically allocated an IP address or otherwise is not in a state that enables normal communication with the network. CPE management information is communicated using an IP address identifying a destination CPE but exclusively associated with CPE management. The access node that receives the CPE management information reconfigures the packets to translate the address to a fixed, non-public address. The same fixed address can be shared by all of the CPE's connected to the access node. The CPE recognizes the fixed address as though it were being addressed locally rather than through the network and is therefore able to receive the CPE management information even if the CPE has not been authenticated or dynamically allocated an IP address.

A residential gateway authenticates a user using a modified digest authentication scheme by storing a sequence number in the nonce field. Systems and methods for extending optical network services across non-optical channels

An optical communication system comprises a network interface device (NID) having a media converter coupled to an optical fiber of a passive optical network (PON). The media converter converts optical signals from the PON into electrical signals for communication across at least one non-optical channel, such as a conductive or wireless connection, to customer premises equipment (CPE), such as a residential gateway or other customer premises (CP) device. Rather than implementing an optical media access control (optical MAC) layer in the NID, an optical MAC layer for handling PON protocols and management is implemented by the CPE, thereby effectively extending the customer end of the PON across at least one non-optical connection to the CPE. By implementing the optical MAC layer at the CPE, the complexity of the NID is reduced thereby lowering the cost of the NID. In one embodiment, in an effort to further reduce the complexity of the NID, the optical MAC layer is configured to control a laser-on state of an optical transmitter in the NID.
