A broadband residential gateway (BRG) is a user interface to a broadband communication system providing packetized telephone service and other media services. The BRG has multiple ports, and each port is connected to one or more telephones. The multiple ports may be mapped to a single directory number, or the multiple ports may be mapped to multiple directory numbers. The BRG can provide greeting and message features. A greeting may instruct a caller to select a port which is associated with a party the caller is attempting to reach. Also, a message, played after the greeting, may further instruct the caller.

A broadband access node includes a port for connection with a Digital Subscriber Line and a processor to run code that implements a virtual maintenance end point (vMEP). The vMEP translates an IEEE 802.1ag Loopback Message (LBM) received from a device on an Ethernet access network into a legacy operations and maintenance (OAM) message that is transmitted to a residential gateway (RG) device. The legacy OAM message determines a link-level connectivity status between broadband access node and the RG device. A residential gateway (RG) for distributing multimedia services to residential and business premises is disclosed. The RG connects multiple communication devices, such as TVs, telephones, computers, security cameras, and utility billing devices, to an Ethernet based metro/access network through either an optic fiber or a coaxial cable. A method for providing self-provisioning of VoIP telephony to a subscriber of a VoIP telephony service is disclosed. An un-provisioned residential gateway that is associated with the subscriber is instructed to collect a subscriber numeric identity that uniquely identifies the subscriber and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) information that are associated with the subscriber. An example of a subscriber numeric identity that uniquely identifies the subscriber is the subscriber's E.164 address. The E.164 address and Personal Identification Number (PIN) information is verified. A source IP address that is associated with one or more Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) messages that are sent by the residential gateway is used as a residential gateway IP address for the residential gateway. The residential gateway IP address is then used to provision the residential gateway that is associated with the subscriber. According to certain embodiments, the above steps are carried out by a call agent from a self-provisioning system of a provider of the VoIP telephony services. One or more VoIP connections are established between the residential gateway and an announcement server. The announcement server sends VoIP messages through the VoIP connections to the subscriber via the residential gateway. A system and method for the automatic discovery and provisioning of a video set top box within an IPTV network is provided. When first connected to a residential gateway, the set top box requests the address information of the residential gateway. The set top box then sends a request to a video operations and support server (VOSS) with the identifying information for the set top box and the residential gateway. Once the VOSS determines that the residential gateway is authorized for video service, the VOSS associates the residential gateway with the set top box. The VOSS then communicates the authorization to a middleware server, which downloads client software and encryption keys to the set top box, enabling the set top box to request and receive video content. The set top box may be reconnected to any port on the residential gateway and receive video service without being re-provisioned.

A method includes detecting, at a customer premises equipment (CPE) device, a problem associated with a network device. The network device is communicatively coupled to the CPE device via a local area network. For example, the CPE device may include a residential gateway (RG). The method includes determining, at the CPE device, whether the problem associated with the network device is locally correctable. When the CPE device determines that the problem is locally correctable, the method includes initiating a corrective action to resolve the problem. When the CPE device determines that the problem is not locally correctable, the method includes sending data associated with the problem from the CPE device to a network system via a wide area network.

The invention relates to a residential gateway for providing an end user of a network terminal in a residential network with access to an external network, said residential gateway comprising at least one network terminal interface arranged to provide an internal connection to said network terminal and an external network interface arranged to provide a first external connection to said external network. The residential gateway is characterized in that it comprises a secondary external network interface arranged to establish a second external connection with a mobile radio communications network in order to provide a backup access path to said external network, and a control unit arranged to activate said secondary external network interface, if not already activated, in response to detecting a loss of network connectivity over said first external connection, and forward data traffic between said residential network and said external network through said activated secondary external network interface. A method and system for authenticating messages received from users across multiple remote devices are provided. A residential gateway authenticates a user using a modified digest authentication scheme by storing a sequence number in the nonce field. Access encryption keys and sequence number spaces may be assigned based on user or on user/remote device pairs. When sequence number spaces are assigned based on user, and the user uses multiple remote devices to access the residential gateway, the sequence number space may be divided into mini-sequence number spaces for each of the multiple remote devices. Access encryption may be two-tiered, such that a secondary key is generated based on a user's primary key, and the secondary key is only valid for a limited amount of time before it expires and a new secondary key must be generated.

Method and system for providing data, video and voice to a group of end user devices includes receiving end user device group quality of service rules and access network node bandwidth constraints; assigning multicast addresses and unicast addresses to end user devices of the group in response to the access node bandwidth constraints; and providing, in response to the end user device group quality of service rules and requests to receive services from the residential gateways, data, video and voice utilizing the assigned multicast addresses and unicast addresses. An optical communication system comprises a network interface device (NID) having a media converter coupled to an optical fiber of a passive optical network (PON). The media converter converts optical signals from the PON into electrical signals for communication across at least one non-optical channel, such as a conductive or wireless connection, to customer premises equipment (CPE), such as a residential gateway or other customer premises (CP) device. Rather than implementing an optical media access control (optical MAC) layer in the NID, an optical MAC layer for handling PON protocols and management is implemented by the CPE, thereby effectively extending the customer end of the PON across at least one non-optical connection to the CPE. By implementing the optical MAC layer at the CPE, the complexity of the NID is reduced thereby lowering the cost of the NID. In one embodiment, in an effort to further reduce the complexity of the NID, the optical MAC layer is configured to control a laser-on state of an optical transmitter in the NID.
