Embodiment Construction

[0038] Unless otherwise indicated, the same reference symbols in the various figures indicate the same elements.

[0039] Figure 1A The device 10 is shown with a visual user interface enabling the user to select one or more objects O1, O2, O3, O4 (see Figure 1B )one. The device comprises a cursor control mechanism 12 for controlling the display of the cursor depending on the cursor control signal Cc.

[0040] In an embodiment, the user may provide control signals for controlling the position of the cursor, eg, through an input device 18 such as arrow keys, a mouse, a trackball, a touchpad or a touch sensitive layer in a display. Alternatively, the user may provide an audible signal (eg right / left) or visual signal (gesture) which is converted into a control signal by an audio input device (eg voice recognition device), or by a visual input device. In these embodiments, the user actively moves the cursor until it sufficiently covers the target object. Subsequently, the us...

Abstract

A device (10) is provided having a visual user interface enabling a user to select one of one or more displayed objects (O1, O2, O3, O4) with a cursor (CR) having a cursor area. The device comprises a cursor control facility (12) for controlling display of the cursor and a calculating facility (14) for calculating for each object that is at least partly within the cursor area a coverage fraction (omegaoi). The coverage fraction (omegaoi) is indicative for the fraction of that object (Oi) covered by the cursor and for summing these coverage fractions to obtain a coverage indicator (CI). The cursor control facility is arranged for adapting a size of the cursor to a size that achieves a predetermined value for the coverage indicator. Furthermore a method and a storage medium are provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for controlling a cursor in a visual user interface. [0002] The invention also relates to a device for controlling a cursor in a visual user interface. [0003] The invention also relates to a storage medium having stored thereon a computer program enabling a processor to carry out the method. Background technique [0004] In many visual interfaces, a user is able to select an object from a plurality of target objects displayed on a display by pointing at the object with a cursor. The activation area of the cursor is defined as the area in which an object can be activated if no other objects are within the area. While a standard point cursor has a single point of activation or hotspot, an area cursor has a larger hotspot defined by the boundaries of the cursor. Grossman et al. in "The Bubble Cursor: Enhancing Target Acquisition by Dynamic Resizing of the Cursor's Activation Area (bubble cursor: through t...
