[0016] overview

[0017] This article describes techniques that enable users to customize their applications through workflows. These technologies enable users to create workflows by linking an application's exposed events and exposed actions.

[0018] For example, suppose a user of a word processing application wants to customize how the application behaves. Assume further that the user is a teacher who desires inline edits to correct exam papers and adds comments to each inline edit indicating why the change was made. These technologies allow the teacher to, first, select specific events that the app can perform, here editing a document; second, select event filters, here restricting the workflow to documents created by the student; and third, select actions, here Open a new document box and place the teacher's cursor in the comment box. These technologies enable instructors to build workflows customized to a word processing application for grading test papers by select...

Abstract

Embodiments of the invention generally relate to custom workflows that users can create. Specifically, this article describes techniques that enable users to customize their applications through workflows. In contrast to the often simplistic rules, these user-selectable workflows can be arbitrary and nearly infinite in number and complexity. Additionally, these workflows do not require application designers to build them by adding or changing the application's code. These technologies enable users to create workflows by linking an application's exposed events and exposed actions. These connections, called "synapses," are used by these technologies to build workflows, thereby allowing users to customize applications.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the invention relate generally to the field of computers. Specifically, it relates to custom workflows that users can create. Background technique [0002] Software applications typically have a fixed set of rules that a user of the application can select. For example, an email application may include, as a user-selectable option, a rule that forwards emails with certain words in the subject line or with a certain sender's email address. Or for example, a word processing application may include rules that automatically correct a selected misspelled word with its correct spelling, such as correcting the misspelled word "thier" with the correct spelling "their". [0003] However, application users may desire to customize their application beyond a fixed set of rules. These desired customizations often require the application's designer to create or change the application's code to implement. Therefore, it is time consuming and expensiv...
