Embodiment Construction

[0063] Now refer to the attached picture , which shows the picture For the purpose of understanding various embodiments of the present disclosure, figure 1 Shown is a substantially flat or substantially planar thermoplastic sandwich panel 106 that may be formed into a structural tube 102 (FIG. 10). Structural tube 102 may be implemented in a variety of applications including, but not limited to, implementation of duct 180 ( FIG. 28 ) as an environmental control system (not shown) of an aircraft (not shown). While heating the thermoplastic sandwich panel 106 to near the glass transition temperature of the thermoplastic sandwich panel 106, the mandrel 200 ( image 3 ) is wrapped around a substantially flat thermoplastic sandwich panel 106 to form the structural tube 102. After wrapping the thermoplastic sandwich panel 106 around the mandrel 200, the thermoplastic sandwich panel 106 may be passively and / or actively cooled and the mandrel 200 may be removed to thereby form the...

Abstract

The method of forming the structural tube may include forcing a substantially flat thermoplastic sandwich panel against a mandrel and heating the thermoplastic sandwich panel to a temperature below a glass transition temperature. The method may further include cooling the thermoplastic sandwich panel and removing the mandrel, thereby forming the tube section.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to structural pipes and, more particularly, to methods of forming pipes or ducts from thermoplastic composite materials. Background technique [0002] Aircraft, such as commercial airliners, often include various conduits for routing fluids, such as air, throughout the aircraft. For example, a commercial aircraft may include a plurality of ducts for routing conditioned air throughout the aircraft cabin as part of the aircraft's environmental control system. Because of the need to provide conditioned air at a controlled temperature, environmental control system ducting can be insulated. [0003] Existing methods for making pipes for aircraft include the use of casting moulds. Fiberglass can be stacked over one or more molds. After the glass fibers have cured, the foam can be bonded to the glass fibers alone to provide insulation to the pipe. Unfortunately, the process of making casting molds is labor intensiv...
