Embodiment Construction

[0055] will now refer to Figure 1a and 1b describe examples of multimode filters.

[0056] The basis of the invention is to couple signals into and out of a multimode resonator using a specific type of coupling hole arrangement in which two or more modes are simultaneously excited (or energy is coupled from) ).

[0057] In this example, filter 100 includes a resonator body 110 encapsulated in metallization layers (not shown for clarity). At least two hole arrangements are formed in the metallization layer: an input coupling hole 120 and an output coupling hole 130 . These holes are formed by the absence of metallization, with the remainder of the resonator body essentially encapsulated in its metallization layers. Apertures 120 and 130 may be formed by, for example, chemically or mechanically etching metallization surrounding resonator body 110 to remove the metallization and thereby form one or more apertures. The hole or holes may also be formed by other means, such as c...

Abstract

A multi-mode filter (100) comprising a resonator body (110) comprising a piece of dielectric material, the resonator body being configured to support a first resonant mode and a second resonant mode, the resonator body having a covering of an electrically conductive material, wherein the covering is provided with a coupling aperture arrangement, the coupling aperture arrangement comprising: a first coupling segment (120) and a second coupling segment (130), wherein the first coupling segment is configured to couple a first magnetic field or a first electric field to the first resonant mode or the second resonant mode within the resonator body and the second coupling segment is configured to couple a second magnetic field or a second electric field to the first resonant mode or the second resonant mode within the resonator body.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to filters, and in particular to multimode filters comprising a resonator body, for use eg in frequency division duplexers for telecommunication applications. Background technique [0002] Reference in this specification to any prior publication (or information derived therefrom) or to any known material is not and should not be deemed to be an acknowledgment or admission or any form of implication of the prior publication (or from information obtained therefrom) or known data form part of the common general knowledge in the field to which this description is concerned. [0003] All physical filters essentially consist of multiple energy storage resonant structures with paths for energy to flow between the various resonators and between the resonators and the input / output ports. The physical implementation of the resonators and the way they are interconnected will vary by type, but the same basic concepts apply to all. S...
