Problems solved by technology

[0006] However, energy storage systems face many design challenges
Among them, a major issue during operation is to maintain a suitable balance between the battery packs for the state of charge (SOC) of the individual battery packs in the multi-group energy storage system.
[0007] To date, state-of-the-art systems have achieved battery pack or cell balancing through complex hardware and circuitry, but it has several disadvantages such as lack of efficiency, increased cost, and increased risk of failure
Additionally, existing systems focus on charge transfer between battery packs, which results in energy loss due to inefficiency in the transfer process

Abstract

Systems and methods for balancing state of charge among multiple energy storage modules in a hybrid vehicle are disclosed. The method includes determining a state of charge of a single energy storage module of the plurality of energy storage modules operatively connected to a power source within a hybrid electric vehicle. The vehicle is operated using the subset of the plurality of energy storage modules when the state of charge of the subset of the plurality of energy storage modules is outside the tolerance relative to the remainder of the plurality of energy storage modules. The method may be used to charge or discharge the energy storage modules in order to equalize the states of charge of the energy storage modules.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application 61 / 789526, filed March 15, 2013, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] The present invention relates generally to energy storage systems for hybrid electric vehicles, and more particularly to systems and methods for balancing the states of charge of energy storage systems in hybrid electric vehicles. [0004] Concerns about global climate change have grown over the past few years due to increasing levels of carbon dioxide and shortages in fuel supplies. As a result, some automakers and consumers have become more interested in vehicles with lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency. One viable option is a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), which allows a vehicle to be propelled by an electric motor, an internal combustion engine, or a combination of both. [0005] Although several features are i...
