Embodiment Construction

[0143] For the purposes of promoting an understanding of the principles of the disclosure, reference will now be made to the embodiments illustrated in the drawings, and specific language will be used to describe the same. However, it should be understood that no limitation of the scope of the present disclosure is intended herein. For example, logical, mechanical and electrical changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure.

[0144] Conventional methods for hypoglycemia detection only monitor blood glucose measurements. Typical management for hypoglycemia includes recommending carbohydrate intake if measured blood glucose levels are below a certain threshold. Such thresholds are typically set by a healthcare provider and do not change over time. Common methods for treating hypoglycemia do not necessarily include tracking the patient's blood glucose measurements to verify that the patient is no longer hypoglycemic. Furthermore, th...

Abstract

A system is described herein to detect and treat hypoglycemia. An example of this system involves the detection of hypoglycemia in a patient with a computing device, computation of a recommended carbohydrate amount to ingest by the patient with the computing device in response to said detecting the hypoglycemia, output of the recommended carbohydrate amount with the computing device, and the performance of a hypoglycemia surveillance with the computing device to determine whether the recommended carbohydrate amount remedied the hypoglycemia.

Description

Background technique [0001] Diabetics always try to tightly control their blood glucose levels to avoid harmful consequences of their condition. High blood glucose levels, commonly called hyperglycemia, for example, can lead to organ damage, ketoacidosis, and / or a chronically debilitating or life-threatening condition. If left untreated, a low blood glucose condition, commonly known as hypoglycemia, can lead to unconsciousness or even death. To avoid these problems, diabetics typically closely monitor their blood glucose levels and adjust their treatment regimen from time to time to avoid hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. For example, when experiencing hypoglycemia, a health care provider (HCP) may recommend that diabetics consume a specific amount of carbohydrates (eg, drink a specific amount of orange juice) to elevate their blood glucose levels. However, sometimes a follow-up assessment does not occur to see if the hypoglycemia has been addressed. And, in some cases, the a...
