Abstract

The present invention describes implantable therapeutic devices, systems and methods for treating patients. The device comprises a hollow refillable housing (130) for implantation in the posterior segment of the eye through a puncture in the sclera of the eye, comprising a proximal retaining structure (120) protruding outwardly from a proximal region of the housing, an access portion An opening, and a pierceable barrier (140) positioned at least partially within the passage portion opening, the pierceable barrier being configured to be repeatedly pierced. The rigid porous structure (150) is positioned in a region of the housing away from the passage portion opening into a reservoir (160) extending along an axis between the pierceable barrier and the porous structure, the reservoir comprising dimensions A volume determined to deliver a therapeutic amount of a therapeutic agent to the eye over an extended period of time. A cover (110) is coupled to at least an upper surface of the proximal retention structure.

Description

[0001] Cross-reference of priority documents [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 806,267, filed March 28, 2013, entitled "Ophthalmic Implant for Delivering Therapeutic Substances" Benefit. The priority of this filing date is claimed here and the disclosure of this Provisional Patent Application is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Diseases that affect vision can be treated with various therapeutic agents, but delivering drugs to the eye remains challenging. Injecting a therapeutic agent through the eye can be painful and involves some risk of infection, bleeding, and retinal detachment. Depending on the frequency, intraocular injections can be time consuming for both the patient and the physician. Thus, in at least some instances, drugs may often be administered less frequently than prescribed, resulting in suboptimal therapeutic effects. Furthermore, bolus intraocular ...
